Popular Job-Searching Websites
"Usain bolting"
Creative Circle / creativecircle.com
Creative Circle is a job site for student-athletes who are interested in careers related to website and graphic design, creative and technical writing, and advertising. You can search their website for jobs located in Los Angeles, as well as other major cities like NYC, San Francisco, or Chicago. Additionally, you can submit your resume to one of their professionals to review so that they can circulate it within their network.
USA Jobs / usajobs.gov
USA Jobs is the official job site of the US Federal Government. They have any and all job opportunities listed within every governmental agency and every location. Be aware that the application process typically takes longer if you apply for a job per the USA Jobs site. Once your application and resume is uploaded, then it gets sent to the appropriate agency which could take up to 30-60 days for them to respond, if they even do respond. In addition to applying online, it would be good if you also jotted down the phone numbers to the agencies where you applied.
Creative Hotlist / creativehotlist.com
Another job site for creative people where you can run detailed searches for many companies within advertising agencies, architecture firms, design studios, public relation firms, and the like. A technical background comes in handy, however, most of the big-salaried positions do not require much if any technical experience. These positions are sales positions and a student-athletes' collegiate experience becomes a huge advantage in separating yourself from the competition.
Dice / dice.com
Techies and gadget geeks, this is the site for you. It is necessary to possess a major or background in computer science, information technology, or engineering to pursue a career within this field. They have listings for over 50 tech companies and 2000+ jobs in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Though, most of the positions they offer are not entry-mid level.
Craigslist / craigslist.org
Craigslist might very well be one of the more efficient job sites out there. One of the main reasons is that employers use the repost method so their job posting continues to come up on the very first pages of the website within their 30-day membership. Therefore, you as a job seeker are typically seeing the most current jobs available and as such, do not have to waste valuable time in filtering through the older vs. newer jobs.
Monster / monster.com
The popular job-searching site where many user reviews have cast this "monster" as nothing more than a hoax for its ability to promise big things and deliver nothing. But why then do many job seekers and posters continue to use Monster? In a time when online job searching was negligible, Monster came in and dominated the market. Fast forward ten years later and Monster has continued to enjoy their groundbreaking and innovative status as one of the first popular job-searching websites. It should be noted that many job seekers submit their resume online, so that Monster can bundle all these resumes and in turn, sell these to companies.
Careerbuilder / careerbuilder.com
Another popular job-searching website, Careerbuilder has enjoyed success due to its company model of powering the career sites for more than 9,000 websites, which includes 140 online news sites like latimes.com. Similar to Monster, Careerbuilder promises much but delivers only little. Running detailed searches for jobs results in some of the most irrelevant jobs you could see. It should be noted that many job seekers submit their resume online, so that Careerbuilder can bundle all these resumes and in turn, sell these to companies.
Simply Hired / simplyhired.com
Simply Hired is a job-searching site that pulls data off existing sites and feeds them directly onto their own hosted website. For instance, you might peruse Simply Hired and find a job opening as an Occupational Therapist. If you were to click on that listing, the link would take you directly to the company or organization that is hiring. Simply Hired has formed strategic partnerships with online social networking giant, Linked In, and software pros, Taleo, in strengthening their position in the market. While Simply Hired has changed the way people search for jobs, this is another site that falls short of expectations as they try to satisfy everyone's tastes.
Linked In / linkedin.com
Linked In is another internet company that has changed the way we search for jobs. Rather than uploading a resume, Linked In scans each member's profile for keywords that in turn populate a database for companies to search prospective employees. So, if you worked at a sports company, and are a part of a sports group, and your education is receiving a Master's in Sports Administration, then your profile would come up on Nike or Adidas' search queries. As mentioned above, Linked In's database of jobs is powered from Simply Hired. Linked In's hiring solution products compete with Taleo.
College Recruiter / collegerecruiter.com
CollegeRecruiter.com alleges that they are the leading career site used by students hunting for internships and recent graduates searching for entry-level careers. In conducting a search for jobs in Los Angeles, CA, CollegeRecruiter.com returned more than 32,000 jobs and their layout isn't the most eye-catching that would encourage you to read past the first page of results. As popular as this site might be, all arrows point to a Monster or Careerbuilder stepchild. You can submit your resume on the site, which in turn, leads to packaging resumes and selling that to companies.
Higher Ed Jobs / higheredjobs.com
Higher Ed Jobs is the number one resource for job seekers looking for positions within higher education. Jobs range from Administrative Assistant positions to Deans, and Mathematics Instructors to Fundraisers. Basically, this site is like searching for jobs through an institution-owned website. And if you want to apply for a position you've found on Higher Ed Jobs, then you have to visit the academic institution and apply officially through their online system.
Entertainment Careers / entertainmentcareers.net
Entertainment Careers is the source for entertainment jobs, internships and career information for the entertainment industry. They have relationships with most major networks including ABC, Warner Bros, Fox, HBO, MTV, CMT, and with major studios and agencies. Specific to Athletes:
The Corporate Playbook / thecorporateplaybook.com
Based out of Louisville, Kentucky, The Corporate Playbook is a one-size-fits-all online service that connects current student-athletes to employers and former athletes, provides career education, and creates a community of athletes all through their website. Hundreds of student-athletes have used their service, though much of their concentration and success has been in their own backyard. They are slowly expanding out west to compete with Athletes to Business and Career Athletes.
Athletes to Business / athletestobusiness.com
Athletes to Business, or better known as A2B, is a private company located in Orange County that works alongside college athletic departments in providing additional resources like private career coaching or interview tips, and places student-athletes in corporate America jobs. They have a long list of Athletic Departments, primarily on the west coast, that they partner with to assist student-athletes with finding a job. The jury is out on how well they provide their service, though many student-athletes have praised their private coaching, but have shunned their company placement recommendations.
Career Athletes / careerathletes.com
Career Athletes is probably the oldest of career development services to student-athletes and athletic departments as they date back to 1998. Promoting their guns of on-campus seminars and their online community, Career Athletes has developed a strong enough reputation, especially in the mid-west and the Big-10 conference, that they are launching a national media campaign to grow their database of current and former athletes. Hard to judge how successful they are as they have limited representation and word-of-mouth marketing on the west.
Work in Sports / workinsports.com
Work in Sports is a job board and employment resource for the sports industry. With Major League Baseball retaining their services, Work in Sports has solidified themselves as the premier job board for job seekers obtaining a job in the sports industry. They have built relationships with many professional teams and organizations like MLB, the NBA, the National Lacrosse League, and Los Angeles Galaxy, to name a few. While employers are not charged for posting jobs, job seekers are ($30 for 4 weeks).
